The Power of 911: Reasons Why Technology Can Save Lives
STORY INLINE POST
Today, the emergency number 911 has acquired a fundamental role in the safety and protection of people. Since its implementation in Mexico in 2016 as the sole channel for addressing medical emergencies, civil protection, security, and public services calls, this service has undergone significant evolution, currently counting 192 Emergency Call Answering Centers (CALLES) distributed throughout the country, ensuring broad and efficient coverage.
Each year, these centers receive millions of emergency calls that require an immediate response. To cope with this growing demand and substantially improve the quality of service and response, it is now possible to implement new technologies based on advanced technological infrastructure, supported by Artificial Intelligence (AI). Advances in AI will significantly enhance the capacity to respond to and address critical situations.
Thanks to sophisticated algorithms and voice recognition systems, AI can quickly analyze the information provided by users and determine the severity of the situation. This enables the accurate and timely allocation of necessary resources. Additionally, AI can provide first aid instructions and basic safety measures while waiting for the arrival of emergency services, offering valuable additional assistance to affected individuals.
A crucial aspect is the usage of geolocation technologies, which allow tracking and determining the exact location of emergency personnel and/or security, even when they cannot provide precise information. This capability is especially important in situations where every second counts, such as kidnappings, car accidents, or catastrophic events. Thanks to this technology, emergency services can be rapidly deployed and reach the right place without delay, thus increasing the chances of saving lives.
Furthermore, it is important to highlight why these technologies are necessary today: according to official data collected between January and March 2023, a total of 3,582,461 calls were received, of which over 58% were related to security emergency incidents, 14% corresponded to medical situations, 13% required assistance, 7% were related to civil protection, 4% covered other services, and 1% was related to public services. These figures explain the importance of the 911 service and why new technologies are desirable to ensure an effective and efficient response to such large volumes of emergency service requests.
Nevertheless, beyond technological advancements, it is essential to consider that the human factor remains crucial in emergencies. Emergency call operators play a crucial role in providing emotional support and making critical decisions based on their experience and judgment. Their training and skills are indispensable for effectively handling each emergency call and providing necessary aid in moments of crisis.
The implementation of the 911 emergency system has represented a significant advancement in emergency care in Mexico. Before its implementation, reporting an emergency involved remembering and dialing different phone numbers depending on the type of situation, which often led to confusion and response delays. With the consolidation of 911 as the sole emergency number, the process has been simplified and expedited, allowing citizens to quickly access the help they need in critical moments.
The collection and analysis of data, combined with effective communication among security agents, even in different locations, is what enables an immediate response to citizens' needs. For the next stage, while it is ideal to seek comprehensive solutions, one can start by gradually implementing radios, videos, cloud storage, and AI, among other technologies, to have a complete 360° ecosystem.
Crime knows no boundaries; that is why there are currently solutions that allow the integration of various security methods from different brands, manufacturers, and institutions, enabling resource sharing and collaboration in the fight against crime.
Although implementing this type of technology presents many challenges, governments at all levels in the region have begun to recognize the importance of using technology in security matters, which, in turn, undoubtedly contributes to the region's economic growth. Therefore, this is the ideal moment for governments, in collaboration with private and public companies, to initiate various actions and programs to create safer cities.
Motorola Solutions is committed to supporting the critical security and communication needs of its customers in the field of public safety. Through the VESTA 9-1-1 Emergency Call Management, it is possible to optimize the challenges faced by personnel and increase efficiency through software that guides telephone operators to the appropriate response at all times.
In conclusion, technology has become a key ally in enhancing the 911 emergency number, which generates a positive impact on citizens' trust and the security of facilities in cities. It is important to mention that the success of the 911 emergency service also depends on the collaboration of the population. Citizens must be aware of the importance of using the emergency number responsibly, reserving it only for situations that require immediate assistance. Additionally, providing accurate and detailed information to emergency call operators is essential for them to make informed decisions and provide necessary help.
The 911 emergency number supported by technology and AI has proven to be a lifesaver for countless people in Mexico. The ability to quickly analyze information, provide precise instructions, and track the exact location of the caller has significantly improved response times and contributed to saving lives. As technology continues to advance, it is crucial to continue investing in improving emergency services and ensuring efficiency and effectiveness in critical moments. Collaboration between technology and the human factor is key to guaranteeing a reliable and effective emergency system that protects and saves lives at all times.
